Cycle Southampton is coming to the city very soon! On the 20th of June 2020 the ‘Sporterium’ will help to boost the cities Cycling image and get around 2,000 people on their bikes taking part and many more exploring the ‘Spin City’ in East Park!
The ‘Sporterium’ will consist of two events, a Sportive and a Criterium for the non-cyclists among you a Sportive is a long-distance ride that in this case will head into the surrounding countryside on either a 60KM or a 100KM route. The Criterium, or Crit as they are also known is a short circuit around the parks in Southampton City Centre that racers will compete in to complete the most laps possible in the allotted time period.
Cycling has continued to grow in popularity in recent years with 12% of adults in the UK now cycling on a weekly basis either for sport, leisure or as a sustainable mode of transport. Cycle Southampton comes at an exciting time for two-wheel enthusiasts in the city with improvements being made to cycling infrastructure including the new Cycle Network on the avenue.
The event is being organised by ReesLeisure, the team behind the ABP Southampton Marathon, Winchester Half Marathon, Southampton Sailing Week, TryTri Events and Wessex Swim School. The experienced event providers are expecting high interest and with a capacity of 1,500 in the Sportive spaces are expected to sell out quickly.
Managing Director Nikki Rees said “We are really excited to step into the exciting world of cycling events with the very first Cycle Southampton event taking place next year. Having previously organised running events and swimming lessons as well as triathlons the only thing missing was a specialist cycling event and now it’s here. We cannot wait to see everyone on their bikes in the city building up to the event and then on the 20th of June, sign ups for the Sportive are now open and you can register your interest in the Criterium on our website.”
