Cycle Southampton has today announced its Criterium line up with an exciting day of racing planned in the heart of the City Centre for all ages and abilities.
A Criterium is a cycling discipline where riders complete laps of a circuit against each other, to see who can complete the most laps in the allotted time. The fast-paced races will provide nail-biting action with many Criterium races coming down to a photo finish.
The Cycle Southampton Criterium is a 1-mile track around East and Palmerston Parks with a dramatic finish line in front of Southampton Guildhall. With race categories to suit every ability, you can get involved whether it’s your first Criterium or your hundredth.
The Criterium races will get underway at 11am with the Primary School Blast, a chance for Children of Primary School age to have a go at their first ‘Criterium Race,’ this will then be followed by a non-competitive Secondary School Blast, for less confident secondary school age children who are newer to cycling. These races will be just 20 minutes long to allow anyone to take part no matter their experience.
The day will then move onto the Regional Youth Series Races with two sets of 60-minute races. Firstly, the under 14’s section then the under 16’s. This will be Southampton’s first taste of competitive Criterium racing with all riders being members of British Cycling with some experience. Perhaps the next Chris Hoy or Bradley Wiggins might be on their bike in Southampton!
After the youth races the day will move on to adult races with three categories that are open to all. These half-hour races will give businesses, charities, clubs and individuals the chance to take part in a Criterium, perhaps for the first time. These races give anyone the opportunity to try a Criterium without the need for a British Cycling Membership, to race against friends and colleagues before enjoying refreshments in the Spin City area and getting ready to watch the elite athletes in the evening.
At 5:30pm the first competitive adult race will begin with the Women’s race for all British Cycling Members of any category. This action packed 50-minute race will be a great start to an evening that will be worth watching and will be free to spectate.
Then at 6:45pm it is the category 3 and 4 Men’s turn to take to the streets. These are riders who will have taken part in a few Criterium’s before and can hit some serious speeds with a wide track to enable even closer, faster and more tense races.
The final race will be one hour long and start at 8pm with the category 1 and 2 Men. Regular riders, who train hard and prepare seriously will take on the course with spectators keen to watch high-quality racing, the best that the South East has to offer with cash prizes and glory on the line under the lights.
The Cycle Southampton team are excited for the Criterium next year and cannot wait to see lots of people on the course throughout the day with some spectacular races! You can sign up to your chosen distance HERE
